For something to do, I grabbed a bunch of free scanners at the computer recycle depot and when I pulled them apart I was please to see the high voltage circuit, discreet, on it's own - a nice little PCB, ready to use for driving fluorescent lights with a 12v battery. Also, there is a nice little step motor, optical stop sensor, and nice cold rolled steel precision made rod.
